Introduction
The Quran is divided into 114 chapters called Suhas in Arabic. Each Surah consists of small verses known in the Arabic language as Ayahs. However, Muslim scholars have divided the Quran later into 30 parts and named them Juz’s, they have marked these divisions just for the purpose of simplifying it for Muslims to memorize it. In this guide, we will walk you through the easiest steps into Quran Memorization.
How effective is this method?
There are two major categories of memory: long-term memory and short-term memory.
Long-Term Memory is our brain’s system for storing, managing, and retrieving information.
Short-Term Memory is the very short time that you keep something in mind before either dismissing it or transferring it to long-term memory.
Our brains take so long to save the information in the long term memory which is deeper and more stable than the short-term memory, so it’s proven that the larger the time our brain gets exposed to the information by repetition, the deeper the memorization will be stored in the long-term memory.
How long does it take to complete Quran memorization?
How should I memorize the Quran by listening?
Repetitive Listening
Spaced repetition (a method of reviewing material at systematic intervals) is known for its effectiveness when it comes to memorization. Listening has been proven by experience as the most effective way to learn the Quran properly without the need to learn Arabic. Repetition is the secret key to memorization by listening. Imagine that you have a 2-minute audio recording you listen to every day for 10 times, how many days do you expect to memorize it if you keep listening to and repeating the same recording every day? Let’s say 3-4 days or a week at most. In the end, you will memorize that specific recording. This is how spaced repetition is a powerful method for you to acquire and absorb the words in your memory.
Do’s and Dont’s
- Break down the Surah into small recordings to make it easier for repeating.
- Try to pick a proficient reciter (Shaikh) who properly applies the Tajweed rules.
- Find a reciter you love listening to so you enjoy the memorization process.
- Keep listening attentively over and over to the same recording.
- Recite along and practice with the reciter so you train your memory and mouth simultaneously.
- Remember that practice makes perfect, and be patient.
- Don not listen and repeat the same recording all at one day; instead, keep spaced intervals between your listening times.
- After you finish memorizing one recording, test yourself in it.
- Don not change the recording until you’ve fully memorized it and passed the test without mistakes.
- Avoid listening to multiple reciters to avoid distraction.
- Don’t listen to two recordings at the same time span.
Why listening?
Pros
- You don’t need to learn Arabic basics to start memorization by listening, but it’s a plus.
- Listening has a great advantage, once you’ve completed memorizing a Surah by repetitive listening, It’s not easy to forget that Surah again.
- Getting your ears used to listen to the Quran makes you very familiar with the Quranic style in a very short time.
- You can listen and practice memorization while driving to work or in your free time without the need to hold a book.
- When you memorize Quran by listening, you not only memorize the scripture of the Quran book but also memorize how it’s pronounced how Tajweed rules are applied, and the correct stops and beginnings, and the melody/style the proficient reciter mentioned above has.
- If you found one good reciter that you love listening to his Quran recitation, you will enjoy learning and the memorization process will become easier for you.
- You will be following the same way the Prophet (PBUH) learned the Quran and memorized it and taught it to his companions.
Cons
- This method doesn’t work for all students with the same effectiveness, but it still has the greatest impact among the other methodologies and is considered to be the most efficient.
- Listening takes a little longer than reading to fully memorize the Quran.
