My Child Is Memorizing Quran but Keeps Making the Same Mistake. Should We Keep Repeating the Verse?

When a child repeatedly makes the same mistake during Quran memorization, parents may naturally think the answer is to repeat the verse more times.

Repetition is important in Hifz, but repeating a mistake does not automatically correct it. If the child continues producing the same error, the teacher may need to understand what is causing the problem and adjust the practice.

Fixing Repeated Mistakes During Quran Memorization

Identify the Type of Mistake

First, determine exactly what the child is struggling with.

Slow Down the Practice

Slowing down gives them more time to retrieve the correct words and notice the sequence.

Accuracy should come before speed during the learning stage.

Use Different Starting Points

If a child only practices from the beginning of a passage, they may become dependent on the previous verse as a cue.

The teacher can ask them to begin from different points.

This helps determine whether the passage is genuinely memorized or whether the child is relying heavily on a fixed sequence.

Correct Without Creating Anxiety

Repeated mistakes can become frustrating for children.

Parents and teachers should correct the error clearly but avoid turning every mistake into criticism of the child’s ability.

The message should be: “This part needs more practice,” rather than “You can’t memorize this.”

That distinction can make a significant difference to confidence.

Review the Error Later

Once the child has corrected the mistake, it should be checked again later.

A child may correct something immediately but repeat the same error the next day.

Returning to the difficult section after some time helps determine whether the correction has become stable.
